That’s a long name, most of our clients simply call it “playing with horses.” That’s the beauty of it, the kids are working through difficult issues and learning new skills that help them in all aspects of their live and they think of it as playing. This model of treatment can address attachment issues as well as trauma. It is not a riding program, there is much to be learned through what is known as ground work.
Working with the horses allows the client to develop a relationship by learning and practicing skills that are crucial to healthy interactions while experiencing the unconditional acceptance from the horse. Clients learn to be aware of their nonverbal cues, personal space, and emotional congruency. Traumatized children frequently misinterpret nonverbal cues, working with the horses provides a safe environment to learn new ways to interpret cues. They learn how to regulate their emotions and behavior while problem solving to achieve a goal.
Families are given opportunities to have new experiences and be successful in working together. We explore how the skills learned with the horses can be used to improve decision making and relationships away from the farm. This form of treatment can be implemented at the start of treatment or at a mutually agreed upon time during the treatment process.
